How effective is parental counseling on parent-child relational issues?

Purpose

The purpose of this case study is to examine the effectiveness or success of parental counseling on restoring parent/child relationships. Studies show that parental counseling helps parents to be better equipped to take care of their children by providing them with the necessary resources, tools, knowledge, coping skills, and support that they need in order to resolve conflict and alienation within the relationship.

Description

As rewarding as parenthood is, it certainly comes with it’s challenges. Parent/child relational issues or family discord and conflict that are most commonly seen within therapy are divorce or separation of family, lack of structure and discipline, parental control that is too constricting, overprotection, abuse, and feelings of alienation and lack of trust and love felt by the child towards the parent. These can produce negative effects on family dynamics and result in behavior problems and even mental health issues in the child if not adequately resolved. Parental counseling aims to incorporate therapeutic strategies and interventions that help parents understand their parenting style and how to effectively handle and manage personal and familial issues and eventually restore the family by bringing peace and structure back into the household. My poster presentation will include different case studies that address these notions and the benefits and challenges that come from parental counseling and the effectiveness of resolving parent/child issues.

Assessment

A case study titled, ‘Effectiveness of universal parental support interventions addressing children’s dietary habits, physical activity, and body weight: a systematic review’, conducted a research study stemming from thirty five previous case studies ranging from 1990-2013 that focused on four intervention types: face to face counseling, group education, information sent home, and telephone counseling in relation to teaching parents how to effectively address these concerns with their kids at home. Results showed that face to face counseling and telephone counseling seemed to be the most effective intervention methods (Kader, Sundblom & Elinder, 2015).

Conclusion

The effectiveness of parental counseling on parent/child relational issues has a lot of support but studies show that it doesn’t always end in success. More research is needed to fully understand how therapy and treatment modalities can better restore and resolve familial conflict and what other factors may be contributing to the disrupt in harmony and how to properly address those concerns.

Effects of Technology Based Training on Speech in Children with Autism

Objectives
The objective is to analyze the effectiveness of technology-based therapy on speech in children with autism. This will add more data to the ever-growing pool of knowledge that is growing around autism and technology. By choosing an exclusive sample, studies have limited themselves to only finding results for one type of autistic behavior. While doing this proposed study, there will be a broader inclusion criterion to try to create a larger sample that can lead to a more generalizable result.

Methods
Six nonverbal students diagnosed with Autism will be recruited from a preschool to participate in the current study. The students will undergo an initial observation to quantify the number of times they use effective communication with the teacher or their peers. The initial observation will take place over the course of four hours, equivalent to half a school day, and be conducted by three observers. The three observers will each be responsible for observing two students and will all be in agreeance on the qualifying criteria for effective communication.
The implementation of the iPad communication application Proloquo2Go will take place during normal school hours by staff that is previously trained in the use and implementation of the technology. Proloquo2Go has been proven in previous studies to help increase classroom participation in nonverbal students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (Collette, 2019). The intervention period will continue for twelve months, allowing students to become familiar with the technology and grow accustomed to using it. At the end of the twelve months, the same observers will return to the classroom for a post-intervention observation of four hours, assessing with the same criteria for effective communication. Once observations have been made and quantified, the data sets will be compared for final analysis.

Results
The observational assessments will be compared to identify the ease of use for technological communication in classrooms with non-verbal children who have autism.

Conclusions
Results will show the effectiveness of technology based speech training for children diagnosed with autism.

Implications
This study could prove that technology is an option that works well and is also preferred by children with autism, raising the possibility that schools will receive more funding for technology in classrooms.
