1000 word count need outline and rough draft:

Assignment Description: For this essay, you will be using your knowledge of the rhetorical situation and ethos to create an argument. You can respond to any of our readings throughout the first two weeks of this semester (4/6) that are found on the syllabus. You will argue a point from one of the stories doing a close reading; your argument must be at least 1000 words. If you are unable to find an argument that interest you and have exhausted all of the options below, see me after class. Just a reminder: if your paper is less than the required word count, the highest grade you can receive is a 60.

An A paper will include all of the following things:

  • A clear, argument-driven thesis that shows understanding of the concepts we discussed in class.
  • Professional and appropriate language.
  • Evidence that the paper has been carefully revised (i.e.: little or no grammatical errors, stylistic issues, appropriate word choice and a clear thesis).
  • An organized, logical structure.
  • Transitioning topic sentences.
  • Paragraphs that are united by a single, big idea.
  • Evidence that the student understands their argument through the use of source material (I.E. the use of quotes to establish your argument is necessary).

Here are some great places to look for:

  • The setting. – ex: How is the setting in the “Fall of the House of Usher” a character?
  • The dynamic between characters. – ex: What is the dynamic between Araby and his love interest?
  • A problem that is either resolved or unresolved at the end of the story. – ex: What does it mean to be content in “Bartleby the Schriver?”
  • Themes found in the story – ex: What do dreams represent in “The Circular Ruins?”
  • Imagery or Symbols – ex: How are symbols representative of the characters of “The Things They Carried?”
  • IF you have any other ideas, I am open to them. Read carefully the story of your choice and write about what strikes your interest.
