ENG 102: Assignment: Analysis/Critique Paper

Directions: Write a 3 page essay in which you critique one of the following essays from our textbook Grade Inflation Gone Wild” (p.108 IAW) or “Confessions of a Grade Inflating Professor” ( a link to this essay is in module 3).

Introduce your topic: As part of your introduction, mention both the article title under analysis and the author. Include your thesis statement, which expresses your overall opinion of the validity of the article.

Summarize the author’s main points, making sure to state the author’s purpose and thesis. This portion of your essay may take up as much as one-third of the entire paper.

  1. Analyze and Evaluate the presentation. Evaluate the author’s presentation, as distinct from your points of agreement or disagreement. Comment on the author’s success in achieving his or her purpose. Consider the following:
    1. Is the information credible and accurate? (Consider sources, examples, statistics, etc)
    2. Is the information significant to the audience?
    3. Has the author defined terms clearly?
    4. Has the author used and interpreted information fairly?
    5. Has the author argued logically

**You may provide examples or quotes from the author as you address these points.

  1. Respond to the presentation: Is the article convincing? Provide reasons why or why not. You may consider particular examples, statistics, facts, and research sources. Remember, it’s possible to agree on some points and disagree on others.  Discuss your reasons for agreement or disagreement. You may expand your explanations through example, anecdote, etc.
  2. Conclude: Re-state your conclusions about the overall validity of the article.
  3. Revise your draft:Clarify your position in relation to the author’s text. Refine and thoroughly develop you assertions, correcting any fallacies in reasoning and argument. Proofread carefully for grammatical errors, as well as missing/wrong words, sentences structure, etc.

CAUTION: YOUR COMMENTS SHOULD BE VERY CLOSELY ALIGNED WITH THE ARTICLE AND THE AUTHOR’S ARGUMENT AND TECHNIQUE. BE CAREFUL THAT YOUR ESSAY DOES NOT MERELY DISCUSS THE ISSUE OF GRADING IN GENERAL.

DO NOT DO OUTSIDE RESEARCH FOR THIS ESSAY.
