Social Media Game Plan: You are a professor in the music and special events department at Fairly Ridiculous University (FRU), a liberal arts school located in a beautiful coastal beach
town in Maine. The music and special event programs are largely overlooked by national news media. Your department has many stories that would reflect well on the music and special event program and some that are controversial and potentially negative. These include the following:
• The head football coach is a former band member with a famous rock and roll band the Gee Bees, and composes all music played at halftime by the FRU marching band.
• The FRU acapella group has the first set of identical triplets to perform and compete on the same team at any university.
• The special events department is on probation for allowing students under 18 into an event that served alcohol.

Please write a detailed memo to the music and event director of FRU sharing your views about creating a comprehensive social media plan for the music and special event department
administrators, staff and student-musicians. These elements are required.
• Objective. Why is it important for the FRU to develop a comprehensive social media strategy? What are the appropriate goals? How will you measure success?

• Positive example. Cite a college concert, festival or special event (college students attended the event) that has used social media effectively. How did the school’s
information officers bring attention to the school? In what ways is the school’s use of social media unusual or perhaps unique? Cite specifics.

• Negative example. Cite a college concert, festival or special event (college students attended the event) that has had a negative experience with social media. Through your
research, explain the circumstances and the consequences. What error was made?

• Proposal: Offer one suggestion each for using social media to put the most favorable spin on the FRU stories cited above.

• Conclusion. Based on the PowerPoints, your readings and your research, state the MOST IMPORTANT policy recommendation – one recommendation only. (These are
silly examples, but may focus your thinking – All tweets must be in CAP letters, students are prohibited from posting to Facebook after 2 a.m.) State your recommendation and
then explain and defend it.
