Week 6 Discussion 1: CBT Case Study Discussion

Initial Post

This discussion is based on a case study (Word) of the client Alana. You will read her history of treatment and formulate continuing care with a CBT approach. For this week’s discussion, you will answer the questions below related to CBT and the case.

For your initial post, answer the following questions in APA format.

  1. What cognitive behavioral techniques might be appropriate to use with Alana as she explores her frustration and anger related to stressors?
  2. How would you use cognitive behavioral therapy techniques in a culturally/gender sensitive manner to address Alana feelings about being a woman as a minority in the finance industry? How might the principles from CBT be applied to the case study?

Reply Posts

Reply to two of your peers’ approaches to the case, providing your feedback and connecting your approach to theirs. What do you agree and/or disagree with? Why? Provide your rationale. What else should your peers consider?

This Discussion Rubric will be used to grade your Discussion assignments in this course. Save it and refer to it throughout the course.

The described expectations meet the passing level of 80 percent. Students are directed to review the Discussion Grading Rubric for criteria that exceed expectations.

Note: In this type of discussion, you will not see the responses of your classmates until after you have posted your own response to the question.

Week 4 Assignment 1: Term-Long Portfolio Project Week 4

Overview

As you have learned from several of your readings, diagnosis of a variety of psychiatric illnesses is not always an easy or straightforward process. Multiple observations and assessment methods are often employed to reach a diagnosis.

This approach can include the use of standardized assessment instruments. These can, then, aid you in defining a treatment plan and choosing specific therapy modalities to use in the care of your clients.

Each week, you will identify a standardized assessment instrument/tool to measure the disorders about which you will be reading. You will keep these instruments in the form of a “portfolio” that you can use in your clinical practice to assess clients who present with a variety of symptoms.

Additionally, you will record specific components of the therapy modality we are learning about in that week. This will help solidify your new knowledge and allow you to make correlations between therapy modalities and to which diagnoses they can be applied or when they can be utilized in practice.

Instructions

Instrument/Tool Criteria

For each assessment you select, you will identify an instrument and:

  1. Identify a scholarly, peer-reviewed article that addresses the use of the instrument.
  2. Discuss if the instrument is appropriate for diagnosing the condition it is designed to assess or if the developers of the instrument reported that the instrument is only part of a comprehensive assessment for the disorder.
  3. Describe whether or not the instrument can be used to measure patient response to therapy/treatment.
  4. Discuss the psychometrics/scoring of the instrument, including reliability and validity.
  5. Discuss any limitations associated with the use of the instrument.

Therapy Criteria:

  1. Identify the therapy modality by name.
  2. Identify the originator (creator) of the specific modality.
  3. Identify a specific diagnosis or population this modality is especially helpful with.
  4. Note the specific focus, emphasis, and/or goals of this modality.

Instruments/Tools for Diagnosis (choose one instrument/tool for each diagnosis):

  • Anxiety Disorder
  • Major Depressive Disorder

Therapy Modalities (define criteria for each modality):

  • Person-Centered Therapy

Use the Portfolio Template Assessment Instruments (Word) and Portfolio Template Therapy Modalities (Word) to complete your portfolio assignments. Your information can be in bulleted format or just a couple of sentences for each criteria listed. However, you must use APA citations. You are NOT required to write this in a paper format.

Turn in one document for each week’s topics. (However, create a file on your desktop to compile your portfolio as you move through the term. This will ensure you can have easy access once you begin clinicals and practice.)

ALL criteria must be present to receive credit.

You may refer to the Assessment Instruments Student Example (Word) to assist you in preparing this assignment.

Please refer to the Grading Rubric for details on how this activity will be graded.

Week 4 Discussion 1: Rogers, Person-Centered Therapy

Initial Post

This week’s discussion deals with Carl Rogers and his patient-centered approach to therapy. • What do you think of these conditions for change, growth, and drawing out the potential of the client?
  • Are there aspects of his approach you have concerns about or disagree with?
  • What do you like and dislike most about his approach?
  • How is empathy, therapeutic communication, and positive regard integrated into this therapy modality?
  • What diagnoses would you correlate best with this therapy modality, and why?

Week 3 Discussion 1: Exploring Informed Consent

Initial Post

In your initial post, address the following:

  • What is the purpose of informed consent?
  • What are the main components of informed consent?
  • Research psychiatric mental health/psychotherapy/and or counseling clinics and practices online. Share your findings with the class.
