Your task: Your task is to investigate the motion of an object while falling freely.

Question: How does the height an object is released from (near earth surface) affect its acceleration

Research: (What information would you need to know before making a prediction regarding your experimental question?  Please describe using valid research literature.  You must cite your resources within the text.  Anything you cite below must also be cited in your bibliography.)

  • What is the acceleration of gravity?
  • Is it constant or does it change?
  • What factors could cause a change in the acceleration of a falling object?

Hypothesis: If I increase/decrease (IV) then (DV) will increase/decrease.  Why do you expect this trend to occur?  Justify your hypothesis using your research from above.)

Identify your variables:

Independent Variable (how you are changing it)

Dependent Variable (how you are measuring it)

Controlled variables (list three variables you controlled and specify briefly how you controlled each)

Materials: Please list all materials you will need to complete your experiment.

Procedures/Methods:  Please describe exactly what you will do in your experiment. (step-by-step).

Data :

Table 1:

  • Fill out as you collect data, not afterwards.
  • Show 1 example  of the average calculation.
Height (m) Time (sec)
Trial 1 Trial2 Trial 3

Trial 4 Average (sec)

Table 2:

  • Your heights and average times come from your Table 1.
  • Pick a kinematic that has s, u, t, and a in it to solve for acceleration
  • Show 1 example of the acceleration calculation.
Heights (m) Initial velocity (m/s) Average Time (sec) Acceleration( m/s2)

Graph: Plot Height vs Acceleration. ( label the axis, identify the units, apply the best fit line of curve)

Conclusion:

  • According to your graph hoe does height & acceleration relate?
  • What relationship does your data show? (use the Possible Graphs given below as reference)
  • Does your data support your hypothesis?

Evaluation:

  • Discuss the meaning of the found relationship.
  • Explain if the found relationship agree with literature (research).
  • Discuss any important strengths (Method kept an important control variable constant? Or Method allowed for precise data to be collected).
  • Discuss any important weaknesses. (control variable did not remain constant? Something unexpected that affected the data?)
