HMG 6586 Research & Statistical Methods
Assignment
The objective of this assignment is to familiarize you with some of the basic statistics analysis
and SPSS. You will be using an extract from the Pew Research Global Attitudes Survey Spring
2018.
Steps
1. Log on to elabs at FIU: https://elabs.fiu.edu/Citrix/eLabsWeb/ using your FIU credentials.
Follow the instructions given. 2. Select SPSS 26. 3. Save the file pewusa.sav from this assignment link to your hard or cloud drive, USB. etc 4. Open the file pewusa.sav using SPSS.
Use the command Codebook [Analyze, Report], to see the labels associated with each variable.
You should notice that most of the variable responses are from a Likert Scale. Measures of central tendency (means, median, mode) and dispersion (standard deviation) can
be computed for some variables that are coded numeric – scale or nominal. Note some
variables are coded as numeric for example the variable “state” but these are categorical
variables and measures of central tendency and dispersion are undefined. Standardized t tests are most appropriate to determine if the means from two groups are
similar. For example, you wish to determine if the mean income of males and females are the
same, then the t test would be an appropriate test. Cross tabulations (Cross tab) and the Chi -Squared (2) test allows use to test if proportions
across groups are similar. For example, you wish to test if response to Question 6 is different
across ethnicity and race, then you would do a cross tab with a 2 test. Correlation will provide the relationship between two numeric variables (bivariate). For
example, if you wish to know if older persons have higher income, then you would find the
Pearson’s correlation between age and income.
Assignment.
1. Compute the mean, median and standard deviation of the following variables
a. Age
b. Income
2. Determine if the mean income is the same for a. Male and Female
b. Persons with smart phones and those without smart phones (Q 46). [When
defining the groups for the grouping variable use 1 and 2 only]
3. Determine if the response the following questions is similar across (i) gender and (ii)
race. Suppress frequency tables and display clustered bar charts
a. Q2
b. Q6
c. Q9
In all you will have 6 cross tabs.
4. Determine the relationship between the following two sets of variables.
a. Age and Q22f
b. Income and race.
