numerical problems

Description

Instructions:

You must answer the questions in this exam on your own without help from anyone inside or outside this class.  You are free to use your lecture notes and the Problem Sets to help you solve the numerical problems.  Be sure to cite any resources you use to answer the questions in the answer box and list them at the end of the assignment.

3 files are provided for this assignment:

  1. Assignment3.docx
  2. A2Q7-results+map.pdf (results and the map from Assignment 2, Question 7)
  3. 2017-Lin-etal-Ciona.pdf (this is the source of the results in Question 5)

Read the entire assignment through before beginning to ensure you understand how to report your answers.  All your text and numerical answers will be provided in the text boxes or tables as indicated.  You can resize the boxes/cells as necessary and change the location of page breaks to make the document easy to read.

You must show your work for numerical problems using on the following methods:

  1. typing your calculations into the box,
  2. pasting a legible image of a handwritten page in the answer box/cell
  3. submitting a single PDF file containing legible images of all your written calculations. Ensure that you clearly label the answers with the question number and part.  Please do not submit individual image files.

If we cannot read the information in the images, we cannot give you credit for your work.

When you have completed the assignment, you should have one file to upload to the Dropbox folder for Assignment 3.

  1. This document containing answers to the questions.  Name this file LastnameInitial-assignment3.docx.  There will be mark penalty for failing to name the file correctly.
  2. (optional) If you are providing a single PDF of your numerical calculations for questions 1-3, name the file LastnameInitial-calculations.pdf.

Question 1 [12 marks]

You are studying 2 enzyme loci that influence egg physiology of a particular species of mite.  Locus A encodes a shell protein that influences how well the eggs resist desiccation.  Locus B encodes a metabolic enzyme that influences the developmental rate of the embryos inside the egg.   During the summer, about 30% of the eggs with genotype AA desiccate, 20% of those with genotype aa desiccate and only 10% of those with genotype Aa desiccate.  Genotypes at locus B vary in their hatching rate such that 60% of BB eggs hatch, 75% of Bb eggs hatch and 80% of bb eggs hatch.  The two loci are linked with a recombination rate between them of 10%.

You collect individuals and genotype them at the 2 loci (you can assay the genotypes using electorophoresis).  The results are as follows:

Gamete                      AB                   Ab                   aB                   ab

Number                      100                 180                 120                 600

[1a] Explain what sort of fitness interaction there is between these 2 loci.

Type your answer here.

[1b] Construct a fitness set for the nine 2-locus genotypes and put the values in Table 1.1 (round the fitness values to 2 decimal places).
