Read “Sex, Lies, and Conversation” by Deborah Tannen

Assignment: Read “Sex, Lies, and Conversation” by Deborah Tannen.  (A link to the essay is at the end of this document.)  Write a 1-2 page (double-spaced) summary of the article, using the method discussed in the PowerPoint.  I suggest the following strategy for composing your summary; however, you do not have to turn in the questions, only the final draft.

1.  Read the passage.  What is the author’s purpose?  What is the main point she makes?

2. Reread, highlight, and make notes.  Label each section or stage of thought. Pay attention to paragraphing, topic sentences, etc.  Write a one-sentence summary for each section.

3. Write a one to three sentence summary of the entire passage.  Include the author’s name, the title of the article, the thesis and other pertinent background information.

4.  Write a rough draft.

5. Check the summary against the original passage to insure that all main points have been adequately explained.  The bulk of the summary should be your own words.  You may quote directly from the passage, but you should do it sparingly and only under the following conditions:

    1. When the writer’s language is particularly memorable.
    2. When you want the solid reputation of the source to lend authority and credibility to your summary.
  1. Revise the draft: Insert transitional phrases. Check for style. (Word choice, sentence structure, active voice, tone, etc).

   7. In your introduction, make sure you mention the author’s full name and the article title.

REMEMBER, THIS PAPER IS FOCUSED ENTIRELY ON SUMMARY. DO NOT INCLUDE PERSONAL OPINIONS, EXAMPLES OR ANYTHING BEYOND THE SCOPE OF THE TEXT.

Paper Heading:  Make sure all of the papers you submit have an MLA paper heading and a title. If you are not sure what  this looks like, I have provided an example in this module.

Grading: I place a Grading Rubric in the introductory module. I have also inserted it as the last item in this module for your review.
