1.

I found it interesting that Alexander Hamilton became the nation’s first secretary of the treasury and immediately worked on organizing the government’s finances. He set up different types of programs and one of them included taxation. He created the treasury. America was in debt due to all the wars so he wanted to establish a stable currency to encourage investment and “to impose tariffs on goods imported into the country to stimulate domestic manufacturing.”  I thought that was a great idea because it would mean that the funds would just be cycled into the American economy rather than to other countries. I think this was a great strategy and would have definitely proved useful in our current economy. We have relied on imports and labor from overseas that when the pandemic hit, we were hit pretty hard and scrambling for supplies. It’s ridiculous how we are “America Land of Opportunity” yet we lacked the ability to produce our own goods – essential equipment and supplies – because we focus on cheap prices and labor. That really hit us hard when experienced a shortage with PPE due to the pandemic. Our current situation really opened my eyes on how much we not only rely on other countries for our goods, but we were basically DEPENDENT on them, especially for medical supplies. Why aren’t we able to revert back to Hamilton’s strategy to stimulate domestic manufacturing?

2. The most interesting thing that I found while reading this chapter was the part about the Native American rejection of assimilation, more specifically the part about Handsome Lake. I found it really interesting that he, as a Seneca religious leader, mixed different aspects of the Native religious with Christianity that was brought over by the Europeans. This is a common theme when a native population is colonized by Christians. Much like how Voodoo (Vodou) in Louisiana and the islands of the Caribbean (primarily Haiti) is a mix of African Animist and Christianity, the mixing of Native American religions and Christian ideas is a very interesting idea to think about how religion changes and evolves.
