Students will write a short writing response to the first module on healing and place. This assignment should be 2-3 pages in length (double-spaced) and please use ONE other academic source in your response. This response is based on your own interpretation of the course material in module 1 and the inclusion of one other academic source. Students should upload their PDF or Word document to the correct dropbox folder on the UM Learn course page by 11:59pm on the due date listed above.
In module 1, we examine three ancient case studies that connect place and healing rituals: Lourdes (pilgrimage, place, and healing), Bath (healing, water, and place), and Epidaurus (dream healing and place). In the writing response, students will compare and contrast these three examples and highlight both similarities and differences. Consider the following questions in your response: Which aspects of the physical environment play a key role in facilitating healing? How are the healing rituals at each place similar/different? Despite the differences in religious traditions and historical period, what commonalities can we draw between the importance of place and healing rituals?
The response should also address Gesler’s conclusions at the end of each chapter. Do you agree or disagree with his conclusions? Why or why not?
Students do not need to address every question listed above but should engage in a clear comparative analysis of Gesler’s theory and the case studies that he presents in this volume. Responses will be graded on clarity, level of understanding and engagement with the material, writing mechanics, and organization. Students should include in-text citations when citing (either paraphrasing or directly quoting) Gesler’s book. Please list this book on a separate ‘Works Cited’ page at the end of your assignment. Students may select one of the following citation styles: MLA, APA, or Chicago.
